I wanted to start a different kind of daycare that would enable staff to thrive. After many conversation with Early Childhood Educators, and my own experiences, I agree with the Early Childhood Educator Association of BC's recommendation for $25 per hour with benefits for staff as base pay for staff. Staff are the systemic link to quality of care for children and to meet the needs of families.
Little Fish Daycare has a horizontal pay structure where permanent staff, and in some cases casual staff, are paid between $27 to $30 per hour with health/dental benefits. As a recipient of the Child Care Operating Fund, we are also topping up the wages of our Early Childhood Educators with $4 per hour. With two full-time Early Childhood Educators for eight children, this daycare exceeds guidelines of a one Early Childhood Educator for eight children. As a result, our monthly fees are higher than other centres.
Lastly, Little Fish Daycare participates in the BC Government's Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative and accepts families who qualify for the Affordable Childcare Benefit.
